That's the motto of the USS Abraham Lincoln, still operating off the coast of Indonesia, providing humanitarian relief. It comes, of course, from President Lincoln's Gettysburg address - still to my mind one of the best examples of oratory, as much for its brevity as for the power of the words themselves.

"...that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

"Shall not perish." You can see it on the little girl's cap. Brings rather a new meaning to mind, doesn't it?

I've received word through the service pipe that the officers and enlisted of the embarked fighter squadrons have split themselves up into five man teams - a number which will fit conveniently aboard a helicopter carrying supplies. These teams will rotate ashore for a full day's work unloading supplies from the huge cargo transports which have brought in supplies from around the world. From there, these teams move the relief cargo as fast as they can to waiting helicopters. It's all day, backbreaking work. And they can't wait to do it, because they're still saving lives, every day.

    God bless 'em.

    Credo

"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." - John Paul Jones

"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Ceasar and Cleopatra"

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friederich Nietzsche
