Careful readers will notice a few changes to
the old site:
The blue and gold background seemed clever when
I first came upon it, lo these several (two) years ago. But after a while it
seemed precious and then merely jangling. So that had to go. I kept the old
title bar, because 1) so damned much work went into making it (not all of it my
own) and, 2) I didn't want to cause either of my readers to blow coffee out of
their noses when they logged in this morning. Too much change is a bad
thing.
You're going to see the entire
entry on the front page, no more digging around in "read more" links. The
template is called "Coppola " and was built by one Callum Alden, a rather brilliant and very
generous artist, among other things. He took some stuff other folks had fiddled
with, brought forth order from chaos and then offered up the design free of
charge to an amazed world. I was about to give iBlog the old heave ho and was
only casting my weary eye across the software spectrum until I stumbled across
his offering at the iBloggers support forum . Apart from looking awkward, the
old user experience felt clunky even to me, but Callum's work has gone a long
way towards making iBlog sing for me again, for which I thank him. (And if you
stumble in here Callum, on the off chance, I did keep your name down in the
footer there, as well as in the html, so rest
easy.)
I'd also accumulated any
number of webring tokens over the course of the years too, clublets I joined
while I was trying to lift these pages from mire of anonymity (ah, well). But
ultimately, those were places I didn't visit, and people I didn't much care
about, who cared if anything, even less for me. They were starting to feel like
those buttons Jennifer Anniston had to wear (flair?) on the movie "Office
Space ," so most of those are gone. Except for the Milblogs badge of
course. For a whole bunch of
reasons.
The calendars went the way
of all flesh, as did the javascript squawk box. I've half a mind to put a sideblog box in
there to enable the odd bit of blogging from the office or road, but that can
certainly wait until I actually come off of leave, I should think. The tip jar
made the cut, but had to change its name. Either way, your tokens of
appreciation are, em... much appreciated. The statistics box none of you
probably remember and so I doubt you feel much regret at its passing, but in
case you're curious, we were at 616 entries before that went whirling down the
memory hole. All lies anyway. And
statistics.
There's an integrated
search function at the top right there. And Greatest Hits
(pace,
Dan) have moved to a back up link and off the main page. The blogroll is pretty
much unchanged, but you might want to keep your eye on that in the future, it's
giving me an itch.
The rest is as you
see it. Give it all a spin, let me know what you think. I'd particularly
appreciate it if the dial-up readers commented on downloading speed: Better?
Worse? Still awful?

"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." - John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Ceasar and Cleopatra"
