I'm not sure I'm down with the methodology, but Son Number One's high school (Torrey Pines) ranked number 82 on Newsweek's ranking of the Top 100 high schools in America.

The schools were ranked by a unique system:

    -
Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in 2004 divided by the number of graduating seniors.
    -
Hmm. Seems like some sort of college-bound seniors vs successful college graduates retrospective might have been a better metric. Just for starters.
    -
Especially considering that eight out of the top ten ranked schools came from the deep south, and nine of ten if you include Arlington, Virginia as at least nominally southern (most southerners, and in fact most Virginians, would not.) Now I'm from the south (if not the deep south) and it would probably come as a surprise to a lot of folks down there that their high schools have the yankees beat all hollow at AP testing. Percentages.

    Heh.
    -
Brings new meaning to the bumper stickers found on pickup trucks across the south: "We don't care how you do it, up north"
    -
Guess it's also worth pointing out in the footnotes that: Newsweek excluded schools with strict academic admissions criteria that prohibit motivated, average students from attending which should probably spin down the prep school set that has been spending Ivy League sums getting their kids through prestigious prep schools.

    Credo

"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." - John Paul Jones

"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Ceasar and Cleopatra"

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friederich Nietzsche
