Cotyledon - A leaf of the embryo of a seed plant, which upon germination either remains in the seed or emerges, enlarges, and becomes green.
 
 
                        She blinks inside herself,
                        struggling to name
                        this Waiting.
 
                        Like yesterday, when she turned abruptly
                        at a rattle in the parched grass
                        willing it to be more
                        than a tin can.
 
                        The still afternoon
                        oppresses the dust.
 
                        She strains
                        against the ground glare
                        struggles to divine
                        the wayward dance of heat.
 
                        A bright, tight sky stares back –
                        Noncommittal.
 
                        The house is cool, shady,
                        She turns –
                        Pauses –
                        Fingers a question:
                        unnamed,
                        felt,
                        surfacing.
 
                        Her shoulders slump like the tired trees
                        thirsting
                        for the rain.
