Airbus 380 lands in Melbourne

The Airbus 380, on order for QANTAS, Emirates and Singapore Airlines, will be flown into Melbourne by these three top airlines starting in 2007, a little behind schedule.

Today, November 14, it landed for the first on Melbourne's newly upgraded Runway 34 - a visual approach only runway - with strong gusting northerly winds in action.

The 'bus bounced once before its undercarriage was fully on the ground, but it was a magnificent spectacle which I videod, and which you can see here.

The camerawork is a little wobbly, but at least it's original. I took myself to the airport, did some work with a young man who needs to fly soon (got him on board a Boeing 737 for him to practise his breathing skills, and anti-turbulence skills,

The Airbus seemed to spend a long time on final approach, and because of its size and lack of reference in the air to compare it to, it was hard to judge just how far away it was on finals.

It was also incredibly quiet on landing. Take off is scheduled for November 15 at 9am, and Melbourne Airport (MEL) is operating a webcam service for you to follow its pushback and takeoff here.
