Live Internet Concert Broadcast from Israel this Friday

From the Israel hour discussion list...

This coming Friday, June 18th, 2:00pm Israel time, the Israel Broadcasting Authority's Reshet Bet radio station will be presenting a live special broadcast of their weekly "Gaon BaRadio" show - Yehoram Gaon on the radio.

It's a tribute to the Israeli poet and lyricist Natan Yonatan Z"L, who passed away recently. The show is beautifully titled "Lich'yot B'toch Hashir" (To Live Inside the Song), and will be broadcast live from Tel Aviv's Heychal Hatarbut - the famous Mann Auditorium. Singers scheduled to perform include Shlomo Artzi, Dorit Reuveni, Ha'achim v'Ha'achayot, Orna and Moshe Datz, and of course, Yehoram Gaon himself. News also that Achinoam Nini and Tzvika Pik are also slated to appear.

Yonatan's list of poems includes such works as "Shir Eretz", "Shuv Natchil Mechadash", "Ne'esaf Tishrei (Met Av Umet Elul)", "Yesh Prachim", "Kmo Balada" and "Al Anfay Hashita". His most well-known poem outside of Israel is his famous "Chofim", which has become a standard at memorial services. "Chofim" was written by Natan Yonatan after he lost his son Lior in the Yom Kippur War:

Chofim hem lifamim ga'aguim l'nachal,
Ra'iti pa'am chof shenachal azavo
Im lev shavur shel chol va'even,
V'ha'adam - V'ha'adam hu lifamim gam ken
Yachol l'hisha'er natush u'vli kochot
Mamash kmo chof

Coincidentally, a poem by Natan Yonatan was also performed as a song at the 1974 Israel Song Festival - "Na'ari" sung by Ilana Rovina. The Ha'achim V'Ha'achayot quartet will perform at the show - they produced an album entitled "Al Anfay Hashita" which includes four of his songs.

If you have access to a high speed internet service, you can listen to the show! Just navigate to Rashut Hashidur and click on the Real Player button or the Media Player button in the left column of the web-page. If you have some decent speakers hooked up to your computer, you can close your eyes and pretend you're in Israel!
