New Video: Lecha Karati (I will call you) Dudu Barzilai

With the kind permission of Camp Yona director, Yoni Carr, I have uploaded this popular Dudu Barzilai yemenite style circle dance, which had its world premier at her camp in February 2004.

You can read all the details of the dance here and you can view the dance here.

Latest Videos uploaded

It's been a while, but there are some new videos of current and classic dances...

From Machol Hungaria 2004:

1. Zingualla - a classic Tuvia Tishler dance, here videod at the recent Machol Hungaria camp. Notice all those great young dancers. The video was a hard one to compress and upload, so it's the best quality. Nonetheless, thanks to Moshe Weiss for send me the video as well as some other highlights of this recent camp. You can see Zingualla here

2. Halev - a circle dance from local choreographer Batia Kronenberg which can be viewed here.

From Sababa 2004:

3. Helping out at this year's Sababa was recently-married Larry Denenberg, and in celebration of Larry's 50th, so I'm reliably informed, Moshe Eskayo made a new debka, called Debka Larden (get it?). You can see the dance here.

4. Moshe also can be seen with his classic couple dance, with Eileen, Tfilat Michal here.

5. Also at Sababa this year was Itzik Sa'ada. One of my favourite of his classic couples is Ad Halom, and it was great to finally have it on video, here with Hannah from Philadelphia as his partner.

Many thanks to the Huber clan for the videos for Sababa 2004.

From Rikud 2004:

6. At Rikud 2004, Edo Israely had the opportunity to show his latest couple dance, Hatchala Chadasha. You can see Edo and Loui Tucker at her Sunnyvale session dancing it here.

7. Also at Rikud 2004 but not making it to the official video is Gadi Biton's circle, Ben Ha'etzbaot. With his permission, and the videocam work of Irith Shade, you can see the video here:

8. Eyal Eliyahu also supplied lots of energy at Rikud, and allowed the official version of his new line dance, Kaliente Tambure for viewing here.

Latest Videos - old, recent and brand new

More videos uploaded for your viewing pleasure - keep checking back only here for announcements of more videos.

Jody has cleared the way for some more uploads, so here goes:

1. Ella Ella - Naftaly Kadosh

This is a great classic dance which most dancers who move from beginner to intermediate level will learn, and it may well be the first couple dance of Naftaly's they will see.

There are a number of music sources of varying speed, but notice on this video the speed of the dance. Naftaly is show in a 1992 workshop of Mishael's, and uploaded here with Mishael's kind permission.

2. Debka Inbar - Dudu Barzilai

This remains a great debka of Dudu's, regularly performed in many classes around the world. Dancing at a Mishael workshop shown here, is Dudu, with Yaron Malichi, Odelia (I think), Victor Gabai, Avner Naim and Meir Shem-Tov,

3. Hachayim lakhu Oti Rahok - Yankele Ziv

Yankele kindly supplied this video, from the Chagigah tape from 2003. Apparently the dance was taught but kinda got lost during the camp, and he intended to teach it this week in one of the larger Tel Aviv groups. But for my blog readers, you get to see it first here!

4. Hi hayta bechaf yadi - Tuvia Tishler

I first learnt this dance at its world premier at Rikudia 1994, the same year Tuvia taught the first of three variations of Eifo at Ahuvah. we have kept it in our repertoire all this time, hauling it out every so often, and most seem to remember it without difficulty - always the sign of a solid dance. Here it is at Yoni Carr's Camp Yona.

5. Odeh ya - Moshiko

This is a classic chassidic dance of Moshiko's shown here in 1992 at a worskhop, under the sponsorhsip of Mishael Barzilai. I was early in my IFD experience when I was first exposed to this dance, and recall having difficulty with the typical Moshiko direction changes. Eventually, after it had been dropped from our repertoire, I reintroduced it during the summer when we had a workshop on a tennis court. See Moshiko dance it once through here.

6. Eten Hakol Bishvilech - Yom Tov Ochayon

This is a new couple dance from one of the latest workshops in Israel, uploaded with Yom Tov's kind permission. No news yet of how it is being received in Israel, but it looks good here.

7. Hatinasei Li Ahuva - Yom Tov Ochayon

This dance is also on one of the latest workshop videos, although news is it has received very wide acceptance in Israel and so is very popular. I will be teaching it Wednesday so will let you know how well it goes down. A very pretty piece of music, and interesting moves. You can see the dance here.

8. Yakalelo - Eyal Elyahu

A great fun line dance, still seen at many evening sessions incorporating lines, showing Eyal's creativity and style. Here with Dudu and Odelia Barzilai, a young friend, and shown here with the courtesy of Mishael Barzilai.

New videos uploaded - Olam Afuch, Ma Shebeneynu,

With kind thanks to Mishael Barzilai, some still popular recent dances for your viewing pleasure...

Lili left yesterday for Israel, Canada and the US (NYC) for a few weeks, leaving me to "bach" it. So to overcome the loneliness (and battle with several multi-thousand word essays), I decided it was time to digitise a few more dances from the Mishael collection.

Mishael kindly gave me permission to do this last year at Hora Keff, focussing on older and not so recent material, where uploading would not interfere with current sales of videos. I wish those who sell videos (either current or archival) would allow a few dances to be uploaded with the idea of cross-promotion. I'm happy to offer a link to where people can go, especially to get teaching videos, where someone else makes a living. Perhaps when Lili is visiting Israel she can meet up with some of these IFD identities and charm them into seeing things my way.

That said, here are the latest videos uploaded to the webpage.
1. Olam Afuch - ("Upside down World") - Jack Achayon
This remains a very popular dance, always to be trusted to get people on the dance floor if there is a lull. But not to be overused for such a purpose. This appears to be the choreographer's only dance listed in the Aussie database.
In the video viewable here Jack leads a familiar posse around the dance studio: Avner Naim, Mimi Cogan, an unknown (to me), and Dudu Barzilai.
2. Ma Shebeneynu - ("What that is between us") - Ze'ev Nissim
This partner danced stirred quite some conversation on Rikud a while back when we discussed the section where the woman crosses her arms, which we ended up calling the Playtex move, unique to this dance. The dance has probably seen better days in most groups, but we still pull it out every so often to test our memories. It is somewhat complicated, so perhaps seeing it in action will refresh memories and sharpen moves. The Aussie database lists this as one of two dances created by the choreographer. You can see the dance here.
3. Nochri - ("Stranger") - Yaron Malichi
Yaron is certainly one of the most creative of the new generation of choreographers, and one of the few I haven't had a chance to meet. By all accounts, he is a pleasure to work with at a camp, and his material is usually well presented and accepted.
Nochri is currently danced in Australia (hey, what isn't?) and if you haven't seen the dance before it's worth looking at. Yaron seems to be enjoying himself on the video, although it's a little dark, and the addition of some helpers would have assisted the directions...
Enjoying the video here.

New video: Lines at Machol Miami 2002 - Amazonas/Hopa Hopa

Was going through some tapes when I located these lines from an evening party at Machol Miami

Just came home from first seder and was clearing out the Powerbook's hard drive when I discovered these line dances which I had never got around to uploading.

Amazonas by Kobe Michaeli has been around for a while now, and the gang, particularly Irith and Fran, can be seen having fun washing cars - in fact, it's a pretty nice lineup of typical Miami talent in those first few rows of dancers. Videod in the same sequence is Emanuel Miranda's Hopa Hopa, which is still doing well here in Melbourne when danced on a Thursday night.

You can see both dances here. Just the thing for working off all the matzoh and macaroons.

Blog problems....and More Yona 2004

Every so often, things fall over...

Every so often, the blog software develops a mind of its own and falls over, corrupting the files. I keep a back up usually, but last week the dile system went kablooie and I only had the back up til March 8. Several entries went missing, so if you see things after March 8 it's because your ISP or browser has cached them - so good luck to you if it did!

If not there are quite a few dances added to the list for you to go find from Yona 2004...

Yoni Carr was kind enough to keep me in the loop with her well-produced DVD which easily allowed me to navigate to the dances by choreographer. New material from Naftaly ("Avi") and Dudu ("Mitachamek Meshigaon") looks good, and Yoni's own couple dance, Pitchi Lo Et Libech looks like a winner too.

Many thanks to Yoni for access to her DVD, which has clear demonstrations and teaching.

Here's a mix of old and new...

Some of these were on my private site, but here they are in the mainstream...

So time to update the site with some old and later material. Let's see what up for your viewing pleasure:

Nashkini Na (Kiss Me Please -f-)

Tuvia Tishler in Germany with his cute circle dance. I learnt this at Rikudia 1995 when it was shown for the first time. When I brought it back home, people laughed at it, but it's retained its popularity after all these years. See the dance here, although the camera loses Tuvia near the end, but he pops up again so you can see his finale.

Chaki Od Rega - (Wait one more minute)

Gadi Biton, with Ety showing this attractive couple dance at Hilulim 2003. Shown all the way through, here.

Stav -

Gadi, this time in Germany, with his popular couple dance, with thanks to Matti Goldschmidt, here.

Dabri Iti - (Speak with me)

Dudu with Ilana Vichness at Chagigah showing Itzik Ben Dahan's couple dance. So far I haven't seen an original video, so let this be the guide until we see Itzik in action. You can see the dance here.

Afilu

Connie L. Katz's choreography, as shown at Ramah Rikkudiah ealier this year, from a video supplied by Connie

(I have also transferred some dances from their temporary residence on my private site to the main site, including Avi Levy's Cholat Ahava, and Yankele Ziv's Gachliliyot.)

Been enjoying the "new" classic dance videos?

Ok, I guessed you may have too! Keep watching this page and you'll soon see a list of latest stuff plus some more obscure dances...(yep, Jody released some more server space, and nature abhors a vacuum!)

new dance video: Ahaya - Gadi Biton

Here's your chance to practise starting this dance at just the right time. Here is Gadi in Germany with his dance from 2000, sung by Avihu Medina.

new dance video: Susati Ve'ani ("My Mare and I") - Avi Amsalam

This 1990 classic is not done everywhere, but certainly has its fair share of popularity. Sung by Daklon, the dance can be viewed here, from a German workshop, with video supplied by Matti Goldschmidt.

Posted at 01:34 AM     |

new dance video: Hatzel Ve'ani ("The Shadow and me") - Tuvia Tishler

This 1992 circle continues to be a popular dance of Tuvia's and one of his first (Kacha Vekacha was his first). I had the chance to learn it directly from Tuvia in 1994 when he taught it at Machol Europa, being a late substitute for Shlomo Maman who was unable to leave Israel due to domestic issues.

You can enjoy the dance, courtesy of Matti Goldschmidt here.

Posted at 01:19 AM     |

new dance video: Ki Eshmera Shabat ("For I Guard Sabbath") - Yankele Levy

This 1973 dance has music used in a few other dances, but this version is the classic one....

Yankale Levy was one of a number of choreographers celebrating IFD in the US, for Horati 2001. Also known as Mechol Hashabat, this classic dance still enjoys much popularity. Many thanks to Matti Goldschmidt for sourcing the video, which can be viewed here. Particularly not the hand movements, which often get lost in the transferal from Israel to the diaspora - or is it the other way around?

new dance video: ilu Tziporim ("If (Only) Birds…") - Moshe Eskayo

In Melbourne, we first learnt this 1983 dance when Danny Uziel visited for a camp, and taught it during the regular pre-camp class. Later when I began going to Hora Keff on a regular basis, it became the penultimate dance of the camp, usually about 7am. The final "official" dance is usually Shlomo Bachar's Kvar Acharey Chatzot.

You can enjoy watching Moshe and Eileen from a German workshop quite a few years ago here. And for accuracy, best to keep your eye on Eileen, since both partners do the same steps.

Thanks again to Matti Goldschmidt for the source.

new dance video: Shir Shel Yom Chulin ("Song for a Weekday") - Avi Perez

Now becoming a classic couple dance, with great music...

This is a wonderful 1997 couple dance, on its way to becoming a classic dance. Videod in Germany, it includes the tricky second time through where Avi refused to cut the music and added a transition element which always seems to fool a few people!

You can view the dance here, and the hebrewsongs.com lyrics here.
