Local Aussie Mac user group scores a first: the first public showing of the new iPod complete with "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" downloaded from iTunes

One for the virtues in being involved in a Macintosh User Group is the sense of community with like minded people. Not all have the same passion for the Mac, nor do they use it the same way, but in the case of Melbourne's iMUG, one of the binding themes is how we all use the Mac in our professional lives.

The group has a handful of retirees, but even in their case, they have interesting stories to tell of how they used the Mac in their business life - and of course in retirement, to pursue hobbies and past-times, as well as communicate with family and friends.

The other virtue is maintaining a close relationship with those who take an interest in Apple from a professional viewpoint - journalists, retailers, developers and of course Apple staff. All of whom have presented at iMug over the years with interesting stories to tell.

This coming Monday here in Melbourne at its October meeting, iMug scores a possible first for a Mac user group outside the USA.

We have it on good authority that there are only two fifth generation iPods in Australia currently, before stock arrives in bulk. We'll be showing one of them at the iMug meeting on Monday, but with an additional first: it will be equipped with episodes of Lost and Desperate Housewives yours' truly has downloaded from the iTunes Music Store(iTMS).

Rumours also have it that the following day, Apple Australia may be announcing the longer-than-Longhorn-delayed opening of the Australian iTMS, complete with local music video clips for purchase, and possibly local TV shows appealing to the under-24s.

There is considerable doubt that Lost or Desperate Housewives will be for sale, as they seem restricted to the US market, judging by their non-availability in other countries.

Which is very good for local television network, Channel 7, who showed Season 1 of each which both concluded about the same time Season 2 of each commenced in the fall in the US. Meaning Aussies won't see their return for four to six months.

So if you're in Melbourne Monday night and hovering around the South Mebourne area about 630 or so, come along and see the new iPod in action, together with downloaded TV shows which we'll also show using the video projector, and see how the Quicktime files stack up.
