Hey, Mr. Winer: Here's a few questions about iPods and iTunes back at you...

And now a few questions back to you, Dave, which I hope you'll have the courtesy to apply your raw intelligence and experience to:

1. How does a company whose PCs have just made it to 4% market share own the mp3 hard drive market and online download store with such shoddy, inept, and worst-ever interface products?

Is it a case of mass hypnosis, contagion, infected kool-aid, Madonna and U2, an unlimited marketing budget unmatchable by Microsoft (sorry for the sarcasm, couldn't help myself, one too many ponchkes with the wrong GI)?

2. How does such a small market share company have "faulty" products that cut across four generations of users: veterans (born before WWII), Baby boomers (post-1946), Gen. X and Gen. Y?

Hint: Find someone who has never used an iPod and doesn't know that's the thing connected to all those white things in people's ears they see all over the place. Now take your Archos as well, and give them both and ask them to figure out what they are and how to use them. You might need to have your iBook or Vaio with you if you also want to see iTunes in action.

Help them a little by putting some music on both which they will recognise.

Then stand back and watch. Then ask them what they did, and then take those answers and write to Apple and Archos with their feedback, especially which one they preferred to use.

And then write back to me and turn this into a real dialogue.
