Wish me luck! German Shepherd pup arrives today!

Just to show my passions go far and wide, an addition to the household arrives today!

I had shared ownership of a seven year old German Shepherd a few years back, my first exposure to the breed close up, as part of a "whole package deal".

I've missed having a pet, and a lightning decision was made over the weekend to act on a good tip about a well-bred GS of 7 months... no initial training and early life decisions. So we met the dog at a Victorian Canine Association meet in Skye, down on the Mornington Peninsula, or nearabouts.

The dog, named Shrek by its breeders, comes from good ancestry (that's award winning dad, Lafer, above), and displayed a wonderful temperament. He will be a good companion for my partner Lili's, 18 year old son, Jonathan, who naturally is very excited. Lots of training still to come!

Update - March 27, 2005: We received news while away that Shrek's father, Lafer, had won best in breed at a major German Shepherd Championship here in Victoria. Which is good news for Shrek's breeders!

I wanted to know more about the competition results so I Googled "Lafer" and located an interesting entry here. It is a website that shows the pedigree line for Shrek's father, whose full name is Lafer von Batu.

This site allows you to see the dog's sire and dam, and then trace it back even further. When we did this with Lafer, the entries on this page continue back to 1891, almost the start of the GS breed! You can see that page here. And the earliest picture I located on the same site shows an unusual looking GS named Hektor Linksrhein g. Horand Grafrath  SZ  1.

His dam, named Lene, was born in 1884. I wonder how many of us could trace our lineage with such precision! I surely didn't know what I was getting into when we got Shrek. Just as well I'm a psychologist!

Here's Shrek as a puppy, with his mum, Tia. Might be time to start a dogblog.

UPDATE: Shrek had a tough time his first day accommodating to new surroundings and people. Some howling and carrying on, and he is still a little avoidant of me. It's a power thing - the women love him, and he seeks them out. Better show him who's boss - gently of course. He found his bed by himself (the ones that lift them off the ground) and went for a long walk this morning and heeled well on a short lead with choker. Another 48 hours should see him snap into recognising he has a new home and parents and playfriends.
