"Pen-revolving."
Joey says it's called "doll-revolving" in her
community - the practice of selling your dolls to buy a new one. I am selling
several pens to make way for a new one. Doll-revolving is frowned upon, Joey
says, because it's very much like selling your kids. I have not yet come to
consider my pens as progeny. (Moreover, I have actual progeny, which does make a
difference.)
The good thing is that I've sold the pens to a friend, who appreciates them and uses them. He's made it his mission to improve his penmanship. There is no reason to strive for more than minimal legibility, if you only intend to communicate. There is no reason to coordinate your clothes, if you only intend to spare yourself embarrassment. What is lovely about humanity is we do all sorts of things for no reason, and thereby make our lives more beautiful, interesting and worth flashing in front of our eyes. He showed me his practice sheets, his 45ยบ letter N, and how he was learning to create the light and heavy strokes required for copperplate. I felt like a proud mommy.

I hope Froggy arrives safely! Surely the post office will not burn down twice.
