| For
the third film in the Lord
of the Rings Trilogy, I did several shots involving the
large-scale digitally simulated armies that were created in "Massive"
(crowd animation software). My job was to adjust the settings of
the digital armies
so that they looked realistic, and integrate them properly with the
live-action stuntmen. The images were rendered in Weta's
proprietary "Grunt" rendering software (which at the time had no
graphical interface). For example, in the above shot, there
are about 50 live-action stuntmen in costume in the foreground, and
tens of thousands of digital soldiers and orcs in the background. |
