PRAYER FLAGS – Each year, families participating in the Eastside Catholic Faith Formation Ministry are asked to do a family project. This year, they were invited to make Prayer Flags. The practice of making and displaying prayer flags comes from Tibetan Buddhist tradition. The prayer flags – colorful panels or rectangular cloths with texts and images – are often found along mountain ridges and peaks of the Himalayas to bless the surrounding countryside with peace and prosperity. Prayer flags are also gentle reminders to open our hearts and minds to the world around us. As they wave in the wind, these prayer flags lift up and carry our wishes, desires and prayers for compassion, peace and healing around the earth. Our own faith tradition uses incense as a symbol of our prayers rising like incense before our God. In Psalm 141 the psalmist prays: O God, hear my voice when I call to you. May my prayer rise before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice. A more peaceful world is still possible and must begin in each of us – one open heart at a time. The prayer flags are hanging on the Holy Rosary Campus, strung from the school building to the church. A photo board has been created for each parish to display and to share in the prayerful work of our families. Go to the Gallery page.
