| The Original Mac Mini Dock |
| It consists of milled aluminum stock (perforated for
ventilation), epoxy putty formed around the connector ends, and soft,
springy nylon pile to give a firm but smooth slide on the sides. It
features an on/off button linkage and a lever for ejecting the Mac Mini
unit.
Using the same basic architecture, a more cosmetic desktop
version is in the works, as well as a rack-mount version so that Mac
Mini clusters can be easily and quickly devised. A Provisional Patent
Application has been submitted, and Apple has been contacted to see if
we can get at their supply of proprietary power connectors; that's a
tough part about installing a Mac Mini in a car; whether you use an
inverter and the Apple power brick or a DC-DC converter. (see the Carnetix
forums for more.) The cost is (are you sitting down?) $400 apiece, and
you'll have to provide the Apple power supply, or hook up a DC-DC
converter yourself (I'm just offering the mount, I'm not going to get
into the liability/warranty issues of doing surgery on your Mini!).
That's cheaper than the Japanese version. I wish I could offer it
cheaper; if I received a large mass order, I could have a pieces CNC'd
and have parts in stock. Until then, each one is individually
handcrafted. Still interested? email me lazzwaldo@mac.com Mini Movies of inserting/ejecting with the Dock are on my download page. Click here to get to my download page, Many thanks to MacVroom, 123macmini, Gizmodo , MacSlash, Hack a Day, and Engadget for the mentions! |
