Helping Needy Get Glasses/Hearing Aids/Etc.


HOW WE SERVE OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY — Also see (click on) "Contact Persons" listed above.

Although Lions have historically been best known for their service to the visually handicapped, other servces are made available also. SOME examples are:

1.Eyeglasses and Prescription Examinations for needy students and adults are provided through the Beane Trust, a trust given to and administered by our club for sight conservation:
- K-12 students or the Sioux City Community Schools by contacting their school nurse, and
- adults by contacting the Center for Siouxland - 712- 252-1861.
Dr. Daniel Brodkey, optomitrist, Suzie, his office assistant, and their office donate their time, equipment and services for this project.

2. Glasses (eye glasses no longer needed or used) are collected and taken to Iowa City where they are collected from across the state and then taken to the national center for distribution to needy people throughout the world. Chair - Lowell Chellew at 712- 276-2051.

3. Hearing Aids for those unable to obtain them otherwise are financed through our club’s charity fund raising efforts. Chair Lee Chamberlain - 712-255-5909.

4. Leader Dogs are provided free to blind persons. The cost of training each dog is financed through our club’s charity fund raising efforts. Chair - Kim Willer - 276-1341.

5. Corneal transplants can be provided to those in need through the Iowa Lions Eye and Tissue Bank by contacting Bari Ehielers- 253-465 (cell).

6. Iowa KidSight is a program we sponsor with the University of Iowa through our charity fund raising efforts . This program is designed to identify possible sight problems for children in pre-schools. Chair - Kim Willer - 712-276-1341.
