A young woman (Seyfried) named Sophie is excited about her pending wedding to Sky (Cooper), but her greatest wish is for her father to give her away. That's a problem, since she's never met her father and lives alone on a Greek island with her mother (Streep). Unable to let go of her dream, she sneaks a peek at her mother's old diary and discovers a disturbing family secret — her father could be one of three men.
Undaunted, Sophie sends letters to all three potential fathers inviting them to her wedding. The arrival of all three men, Sam, Harry and Bill (Brosnan, Firth and Skarsgard respectively), delights Sophie and shocks her mother Donna, who reveals the secret to her two close friends (played by Christian Baranski and Julie Walters). Sophie and Donna have little time to figure out which of the three former suitors is the one who should give Sophie away.
Mamma Mia! is based on the hit broadway play featuring the music of one of pop music's most successful groups, ABBA. The cast carry the story by singing some of the group's biggest hits, including "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me," "I Have a Dream," "Super Trouper" and the title track.
Mamma Mia! hits U.S. theaters on July 18.
