notes from song writer Dave Baker on World of Small (continued)
Painter Emily Carr grew up in the late 1800’s in Victoria and lived there all her life until her passing in 1945. She is widely accepted as one of Canada’s most accomplished artists.
Emily had several nicknames. Her family called her Small, her friends called her "Em", and the Haida first nations community called her "Klee Wyck" which in their native tongue means "laughing one".
Emily struggled against overwhelming odds to get her paintings recognized by the Canadian artistic community dominated primarily by eastern male artists. As so often happens with artists, the deserved accolades came long after her death. The song World of Small is a tribute to Emily Carr who created art treasures that will live forever.
