Ahni Shalom

I am a Man of Peace

 - Psalm 120 - Hebrew
by King David (circa 1000 BC)

voice of a Rabbi reading the scriptures

*back of the throat - guttural sound

El Adonai batsahrahtah li
I call on the LORD in my distress,

Karahti vayah ahneni
and He answers me.

Adonai hahtsila nafshi misfaht sheker
Save me, (my soul) O LORD , from lying lips

mila shown (as in "bone") rehmiyah
and from deceitful tongues.

Mah yiten lecha
What will he do to you,

omah yosif lach la shown rehmiyah
and what more besides, O deceitful tongue?

*khitse gibor shinunim
He will punish you with a warrior's sharp arrows,

eem gahch*aley retahmim
with burning coals of the broom tree.

Ohyah li kigarti Meshekh*
Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech,

Shach*anhti im oh-ha-le Kedar
that I live among the tents of Kedar!

Rahbaht shach*nah lah nafshi
Too long have I lived

Im sohneh shalom
among those who hate peace.

Ahni Shalom vehkhi* ahdahber
I am a man of peace; but when I speak,

Hemah lamilkh*amah
they are for war.
