Submission Guidelines

The submission deadline for Issue #7 is November 15, 2007.

Cover Letter: All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter that somehow includes the author's name, titles of all pieces submitted, and a brief biographical statement.

Poetry: 3 - 10 pages. Poems should be individually typed and single-spaced on the page. Titles should appear on each page of the poems, the name of the author should not.

Prose: We accept fiction and creative nonfiction with word counts anywhere between 100 and 10,000 words. All work should be double-spaced using a twelve-point font on one side of 8.5" by 11" paper. Do not send us the only copy of your work; we cannot be responsible for its safety or return. Make sure your name and the page number appears on each page. If submitting a novel excerpt, please make sure it can stand firmly on its own. With regards to styles, themes, and genres, anything goes in the Backwards City, as long as it's well-written, evocative, narratively photogenic, and overlaps somehow with our mission statement. Please submit only one story, or up to three short shorts, per reading period.

We are currently running a fiction contest.

Graphic Narrative: Up to 20 pages. Includes black-and-white comics, single-panel drawings, and other pictorial works which engage the reader/viewer. Please submit hardcopies on 8.5 x 11 paper. (We scan and digitize into a variety of formats - keep in mind, however, that our publication size is 6x9" and your images will be reduced to fit. Make sure the text is clear and will be legible when shrunk.) Copies should be clean and free of chaff, spots, stray marks, or general detritus. Submit work flat, unfolded, and in a manila envelope. Do not send originals, as manuscripts will be recycled. If interested in submitting work via slides, please follow the guidelines listed under artwork.

Artwork: We are looking to publish work of all styles. We are looking for cool/strange photography, paintings, and drawings. Work may be color or black and white. However, the interior of our print issues reproduces only in black and white.

We are not responsible for the safety and return of originals, and strongly discourage their submission.

Submit up to 10 high quality slides. One may also submit high-quality printed reproductions (8 1/2x11"). Artist, Title of Work, Medium, and Date, should all be clearly labeled on each slide, or affixed to the back of each print. Prints must be submitted flat, unfolded, in a manila envelope. Include proper postage and packaging for return of your work.
