Group 2 of 2 from 1999 trip
On the way back from Mist Falls this year, I hiked up the Bubbs Creek Trail. There are about 19 switchbacks where smaller Bubbs Creek's hanging canyon drops that creek down to the level of Kings Creek. Got up to the junction where the Bubbs Creek Trail hits the Sphinx Creek Trail, which goes south over Avalanche Pass into Sequoia N.P.

On the way out, I drove out via Sequoia N.P. and visited Moro Rock. Pretty amazing views east from that rock, over the entire basin of the Middle Fork of the Kaweah, and of its many headwaters areas, along the 12,000' to 13,000' Great Western Divide. (I had written "Marble Fork", but that one is apparently the smaller tributary that goes past the visitor center at Lodgepole.)

The following year, Turly and I did a three-day backpack trip in that direction, to camp at the campground at Bearpaw HSC, and a day hike to Hamilton Lake. Saw a Blue Heron up there.

Looking up at some granite thingie, might be that mysterious "Sphinx" thing, but I'm not sure.

Looking into the sun, more granite Sphinxy-sort of stuff.

Looking north up the Kings River toward Mist Falls, from near the top of the switchbacks.

The Rock Face, peering around the corner.

Looking across Kings Canyon at Buck Peak. The Kings River heads south, then makes a 90 degree turn to the west, in order to go around Buck Peak.

Looking west down the main Kings Canyon (after that right turn), from the top of the switchbacks up to Bubbs Creek's hanging canyon.

Atop the switchbacks, and a ways above Bubbs Creek; here was a loud spot that sounded more impressive than it looks.

The trail sign at the junction with the Sphinx Creek Trail. Avalanche Pass is over 10,000', and this junction is at about 6200'. Roaring River is the river that becomes Roaring Falls as it drops north into Kings Canyon.

The Sphinx Creek Trail bridge over Bubbs Creek.

Looking south, up Sphinx Creek toward Avalanche Pass.

Looking down Kings Canyon, from the top of the switchbacks.

Hazy pic of a small waterfall

Hazy Falls, again.

A hazy look down Kings Canyon.

Thick moss on the branches of a ?cedar? tree.

Around the campfire - Andy, Marina, David M., JQB

ON MY WAY HOME: Hume Lake, between KC and Sequoia.

A tall rock on the canyon side, on my short hike out to Tokopah Falls.

A distant view, approaching Tokopah Falls

An unusually healthy ?Juniper? tree.

Tokopah Falls, in all its, uh, glory. I gotta get out here in the springtime or early summer some year.

Tokopah Falls, kinda dry.

Tokopah Falls, a trickle.

The top of Moro Rock, looking south across the Middle Fork of the Kaweah, at the Castle Rocks.

Looking east from the top of Moro Rock, at the awesome (though hazy in this shot) Great Western Divide.
