Orr’s Island

Launch--southern tip of Orr’s Island @ H2Outfitters
Distance--9 miles

Our last day in Maine had to include a short paddle and one last meal of lobster. One of the best lobster stews that we have found is at Cook’s Lobster House on Baily’s Island just over the cribstone bridge (made famous in a Visa commercial a few years ago).

We launched at the beach between the bridge and H2Outfitters (you pay the launch fee at the little cafe next door to H2O).

We decided on a clockwise circumnavigation of Orrs’s Island (which put us starting into the wind and then getting a “free ride” down the east side with a reward of lobster stew.

Just as we neared the cribstone bridge, we heard a loud crash. We paddled over near the bridge to investigate. It turned out that a woman driving across the bridge was apparently so busy looking at the scenery that she smacked (very hard) into the end of the guardrail.

With the excitement over, we paddled under the bridge and over to Cook’s for our reward!
