SILVERTIP SHARK



Description

· What they look like
The silvertip shark has a rounded snout, large eyes and long pectoral fins.

· Colour
The luminous silver/white edges featured on the trailing edges of the first dorsal, pelvic, caudal and pectoral fins makes the Silvertip one of the most striking sharks. The back is blue/grey and the belly white.

· Teeth
The teeth in both the upper and lower jaw are dissimilar, but the bottoms are all serrated.


· Size
Mature adults can very between 165-310cm (5-10ft) in total length. It is uncommon to find specimens over 300cm.

· Food
Silvertip sharks feed are able to feed from all areas of the water colomn, they have been known to feed on bottom dwelling creatures such as rays and octopus, mid water species and surface fish such as flying fish.


Habitat

The silvertip shark tends to be deeper inshore shark, along drop offs and banks, frequenting waters ranging from 30-400m.



Danger Factor

The silvertip shark has been known to attack, it has an inquisitive and persistant nature, coupled with its relatively large size make it a potentially dangerous species.
