GREY REEF SHARK



Description

· What they look like
The grey reef shark is a powerful shark, relatively stocky with a long and rounded snout.

· Colour
As the name implies, grey to blueish/grey with a white belly and, a black trailing edge to the caudal fin and black tips to the underside of their pectoral fins.

· Teeth
The teeth in both the upper and lower jaw are dissimilar, the tips of lower teeth are often slightly arrowhead like, uppers serrated were lovers not.


· Size
Averaging 120-200cm (4-6ft) in total length, the maximum recorded was 230cm.

· Food
Grey reef sharks main diet consists of small fish, squid/octopus and crustaceans, feeding in the water column close to the bottom.


Habitat

Grey reef sharks tend to inhabit rugged terrain such as drop offs on outer reefs or patch reef in lagoons, favourite areas include atoll passes where strong currents are present.



Danger Factor

The grey reef shark is a very territorial shark and has a insidious disposition, they can become very aggresive and is potentially quite dangerous. This species normally shows a defensive display before a potential attack enabling a diver/snorkler to alter there actions towards the shark.
