
· Colour
The blacktip sharks most notable features are the black tips to its dorsasl fins which have a white band underneath. Also there is a black tip on the lower lobe of the caudal fin. The body is grey and the belly white with a visible white band on the flanks.
· Teeth
The upper and lower jaw teeth of blacktip reef shark are quite similar in shape, being quite long, erect, broad based with a narrow point.
· Size
Blacktip reef sharks average between 140-180cm.
· Food
The blacktip reef shark primarily feeds on small bony fishes, the fast shallow water hunter is also known to feed upon octopus.
Habitat
The blacktip reef shark tends to inhabit shallow/clearer water 3m or less, often near reef flats where its dorsal is often seen exposed.This species is found in waters throughout the tropical Indo-West and Central Pacific.
Danger Factor
Although there are a few reported attacks on file most seem to be that of people wading on the reef. Normally they are easily frightened and flee at the site of a diver/snorkler, it is not considered dangerous to people because of its small size.
