LifeDrive flaws
While I search and browse all
the news and
reviews I can find on
palmOne's
LifeDrive, I'm coming
across the same negative comments on the new device, mainly that it's slower
than the Tungsten T3 and T5 due to its hard disk. Supposedly, it takes a few
seconds to open applications, though subsequent launches are quick after they've
been cached. I can see that's going to be a problem for present Palm owners who
are used to instant responses from their Palms. Then there's the short battery
life of the LifeDrive, again attributed to its hard disk. The last quibble is
the lack of Mac support: There's no LifeDrive Manager on the Mac, and
one
reviewer wrote of
having problems getting Palm Desktop to work properly with LifeDrive. I hope
Mark/Space
comes to the rescue soon, as its Missing
sync software is so
much better than Palm Desktop.
Am I swayed from buying a
LifeDrive? No, because if I'm considering it as just another PDA, then the flaws
are unacceptable. But if I'm looking at it as a notebook replacement, then delay
launches and short battery life are a way of life, something I'm well accustomed
to. Just imagining myself carrying around 6.8 ounce notebook is enough to
overlook those minor inconveniences, a small price to pay to live in the cutting
edge.
