I know I'm getting older when...
...more and more I tell people
that I'm 37, their immediate reaction is to stare in disbelief, then reply in
the lines of, "37, really? Wow, you don't look it. You look much younger." My
stock reply is to smile and say, "Why, thanks." But am I really thankful? So
maybe I look a few years younger than 37, but the keyword here is "look." In my
early 20's, no one had to tell me I looked young--that's because I was
young--but now that I'm getting older, the word "look" always precedes "young,"
as though they're one connected word you can find in a dictionary meaning "a
figment of youth." The more I hear it the more it reaffirms that I'm getting
old. So, folks, be gentle to your elders. Next time someone tells you his age,
just smile and say "cool," then move on to your next subject.
