Dr. John Bulman   Bulman now.  In class
ECU Physics 1961-1984

Dr. John Bulman has served ECU in many capacities:  Professor in the Physics Dept. from 1961-1984,
the Dean of the School of Math and Science from 1984-1991,  then he was promoted to  Vice President
of Academic Affairs from 1989-1994. He ‘retired’ from ECU but has returned in a part-time role supervising
the construction of various  buildings  on  campus: the Linscheid Library, the Physical & Environmental
Science Bldg., The University Center, Danley Hall, Tiger Commons, Women’s Athletic Center and now
the largest, The Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center (below).  His truck is outside the center every morning before 7:30 am.

Bulman says he will retire when the $27 million dollar Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center is complete this spring
or “they will bury me in the building!”   He said “I will be 80 years old and will have served ECU for 48 years!”
Ironically, Bulman who has overseen so many buildings did not get to have an office in the new Physical & Environmental
Science Building.  Many will remember Dr. B’s horror when a tornado hit the new P&ES building March 21, 1991
- the day ECU was scheduled to take possession of the building. The tornado blew out part of the North wall (chemistry
end) which greatly disturbed Dr. Bulman.

Dr. Bulman remembers fondly his teaching years -his favorite years at ECU.  Alumni from the 60’s and 70’s occasionally
still write or call to inquire about Dr. B’s whereabouts.  Dr. Bulman will retire to his Mill Creek Ranch with his wife
Berta who is retired from teaching.  Thanks for your dedication to ECU for 48 years!
