Organize
bookmarks in folders in the Bookmarks Bar (Safari)
Many people don’t even bother organizing their bookmarks, but it's easy
to keep them under control in Safari so you can find just what you want the
moment you need it. As you may know, iTunes allows you to organize your music
in playlists. In the same way, Safari allows you to organize your Bookmarks
in folders just as easily as iTunes.
Follow the steps below to organize the main
websites for this course in a single folder located in the Bookmarks Bar.
- Open Safari, and make sure "Bookmarks Bar" is
checked in the Safari View menu, if it is not already. (In
the diagram below, the Bookmarks Bar includes folders for "HSCI Online,"
"Susanna," "Hannah," etc.)
To
reveal an iTunes-like interface for organizing your bookmarks, click the Bookmarks
Library icon on the left side of the Safari Bookmarks Bar.
- In the Collections column (extreme left), click the Bookmarks Bar
collection. This collection manages the folders that appear in the
Bookmarks Bar.

- The Bookmarks
Menu collection manages the folders that appear in the Bookmarks
menu.
- The Address
Book collection includes home pages of anyone entered in your address
book.
- The Rendezvous
collection includes web pages on available Rendevous-enabled wired
or wireless networks.
- The History
collection keeps track of sites you’ve visited recently,
so you can go back a day or even a week later, or drag them into a permanent
bookmark folder.
- In the Imported
collection, Safari automatically imports your Internet Explorer,
Netscape and Mozilla favorites.
- There is a button
that looks like a plus sign at the bottom of the Collections column. Click
it if you want to make a new collection of bookmarks.
- In the Bookmarks
window, you can edit bookmark names and addresses in place as though you
were renaming an icon on your desktop.
There is a button that looks like a plus sign at the bottom
of the Bookmark column (indicated by the cursor arrow in the image to the
right). Click this plus sign to make a new folder of bookmarks. Name that
folder "HSCI Online" as shown in the window above. This is where
you will save bookmarks for websites used in this course.
- Go to the course websites linked to from the top of this page (Home, Announcements,
etc.). At each website, choose "Add Bookmark" from the Bookmarks
menu. (Hint: memorize this shortcut: Command-D.)

- In the dialog sheet that appears, enter the name of the website. If the
name for the website is too long, you can shorten it.
- From the pull-down menu below the website name, select the folder you
want to store the bookmark in. For websites used in this course, select
"HSCI Online."
- Drag and drop:
- You can drag a web address directly from the bookmarks library window
into the Bookmarks Bar, giving you one-click access to that site. As you
move an address to the bar, the other addresses rearrange themselves with
a smooth shuffle.
- Want to drag a folder back into the bookmarks library window? No problem.
- Want to rearrange the folders in your Bookmarks Bar? No problem, just
click a folder and drag it sideways. The others will make room for it wherever
you drop it.
- Want to delete a folder from the Bookmarks Bar? Just drag it up and out
of the Safari window. It will disappear in a puff of smoke (careful! this
will delete the bookmarks it contains, too).
- Want to drag one folder inside another? No problem; do this within the
bookmarks library window.
- For example, you can create a folder called "Web Project"
using the same steps you followed above when you made the "HSCI
Online" folder. But this time, drag the "Web Project"
folder inside the "HSCI Online" folder. The next time you're
at a website that you will use for your web project, you can save it
directly inside the Web Project folder inside the HSCI Online folder.
- Do you use one Mac at work and another one at home? With .Mac,
you can keep your Safari bookmarks and bookmark folders synchronized across
multiple Macs.
