Isis Bibliography
for the History of Science
To find articles that you want to read in history
of science journals (and others), consult the Isis Bibliography for
the History of Science, hosted at the OU History of Science Collections
and produced by Prof. Stephen Weldon. To access the Isis Bibliography
without charge:
- Go to the OU website (www.ou.edu)
- Click “OU Libraries” (libraries.ou.edu)
- Log in. You can enter your 4x4 and password in the fields
on the left margin. If you log in now, you won't have to remember to do so
later. Also, if you are off-campus, some databases may not work for you unless
you have already logged in. Develop the habit of logging in, first
thing, whenever you visit the library home page.
- Click “LORA” (Library online resources)
- Click “Databases”
- Click “H”
- Scroll down to click “History of Science…” You will see
the web page open up, with "RLG Eureka" at the top.
- For this example, let's say you want to identify an interesting article
or two about Newton's alchemy. Enter "Newton Alchemy" into the search
field and click Search. At the moment I'm doing this, 41 items result. Read
through this list of items and decide what you want.
- Let's say that you've heard that William Newman is a respected scholar,
and you want to see his article from Isis (the journal of the History
of Science Society) entitled "Newton's Clavis as Starkey's Key."
You can use the Isis Bibliography to obtain a complete citation, including
date of publication, volume number, and page numbers.
- After you have identified what you want using the Isis Bibliography, then
go to the Library databases
to see if you can retrieve it online. Many journals are available through
the Library website online. But if yours is not, you will be able to find
a printed copy of the journal in a research library such as the University
of Oklahoma Libraries, or through a good Inter-Library-Loan
service. Most of these professional
history of science journals are available in the History
of Science Collections on the 5th floor of Bizzell Library on the OU Norman
campus.
