Preparing
Images for your web pages
When you publish images on the Internet,
they need to be web-appropriate. This means the image needs to be in JPEG or GIF
format, and appropriately sized to display on a computer monitor.
You may need to use image editing software to crop and resize the image as
necessary. Especially if you are getting images from a digital camera, they
may be jumbo-sized! You can use image editing software to crop and/or resize
the image.
You need to make sure the image is the right size and the right format before
adding the image to your webpage. If an image is not the right size (<500
KB) or right format for the Internet (jpeg or gif), use one of the following
utilities to resize and/or reformat it:
- Windows
- IrfanView (free)
- This utility by Irfan Skiljan can batch convert images to jpg format,
perform minor editing functions (cut, crop, rotate), and resize images.
- Macintosh
- iPhoto
(free with every Mac)
- This wonderful little application can organize all your images,
perform editing functions (cut, crop, rotate, straighten, touch-up,
color adjustments, etc.), publish image galleries to the web (if you
use .Mac), create pdf scrapbooks based on various template pages,
etc. The Apple website contains iPhoto info
and tutorials.
- Preview
(built-in Mac OS X)
- To convert an image from tiff to jpg, or between other commonly
used image formats, just open it in Preview and then save it as the
format you want. You can also crop images in Preview.
- Image
Tricks (free from BeLight
Software)
- Image Tricks is a free image editing application that allows you
to crop, rotate or resize images. The magic "tricks" come
from using Mac OS X Tiger Core Image filters to modify pictures in
all sorts of unusual ways (adjust colors, stylize, distort, mask,
etc.). Converts between over 20 image formats (TIFF, JPEG, GIF, PDF,
PNG, EPS among them). Integrates with iPhoto.
- Build Web Pages (built-in Mac OS X)
- Drag a folder of images onto this nifty little app -- even very
large tiff files -- and moments later you will have an image gallery
web page, together with folders of thumbnails and web-size jpgs ready
for using in Composer.
- Open a new Finder window and find the "Build Web Page.app"
here:
Macintosh Hard drive --> System --> Library --> Image
Capture --> Automatic Tasks
- Copy the "Build Web Page.app" to your Desktop or Applications
folder (by option-dragging, or by choosing Copy and Paste from
the Edit Menu).
- Add the copy of "Build Web Page.app" created in the
previous step to your Dock for easy access, if you wish (do not
just add the original app to your Dock, since it lies within the
System folder).
- Drag a folder of images over the "Build Web Page.app"
icon to generate a folder of web appropriate jpgs (located within
the original image folder). Look for the images with filenames
ending in "800.jpg" -- the "800" stands for
a length of 800 pixels along the longest side. They will be around
200KB.
- Commercial products like Photoshop
(available in all OU IT computer
labs) or Photoshop
Elements and shareware products like Graphic
Converter ($35) do the same kinds of tasks admirably. Adobe Photoshop
may be found in the IT Student Computer Labs on campus. Write
me if you need help with these applications.
