Finding Images

One of the biggest problems with images on the web is that many people put images on their web pages without providing information about where the image comes from. In order to avoid this problem, it is good to search for images at reliable websites that provide information about the images that they display. If you copy images from these websites, make sure you comply with any copyright regulations: many websites permit you to publish copies of their images at educational websites, but they may require that you provide a specific type of citation or crediting of the image source. You can also perform image searches with Google.

Do you want to use the History of Science Collections?

The OU History of Science Collections are a world-renowned center for research in the History of Science. Two climate-controlled vaults hold 90,000 books in the history of science from the early years of printing through the 20th century. For example, the Collections hold every edition and every translation of every book published by Charles Darwin, plus a few handwritten letters (over 440 items total!). Of the complete set of first editions of Galileo, four copies contain Galileo's own handwriting. The holdings for Kepler, Newton, Robert Boyle, hand-colored herbals, and many, many others are equally impressive. Here's more information on the History of Science Collections. We'll schedule an optional tour of the Collections sometime before the end of the semester, for those of you interested in seeing the rare books, but if you want to use them for your web projects, you are welcome to arrange with me to see, photograph and use whatever sources pertain to your web project.

Do you want an image from the History of Science Collections?

As you're considering the topic for your Web Project, keep in mind that to obtain images for your web project, you can arrange with me to photograph pages from the original rare books in the History of Science Collections. And you can actually handle the original printed editions of these books, too, while you are photographing select pages.

(Note: We also have a collection of at least 600 uncataloged portraits. To see if we have a portrait of the person you want, come to the Collections to inspect the alphabetical list.)

Do you have a great quote for this page? Let me know! (If used, a new quote is worth 1 point extra credit)
