The following books should be purchased for this class:

• David Lindberg, The Beginnings of Western Science (Chicago, Chicago University Press, 1992 or 2007). This text is a readable and highly acclaimed survey of pre-modern science by a distinguished historian of medieval science. $16.50 at Amazon. Either edition is suitable for this course.
• Allen Debus, Man and Nature in the Renaissance (Cambridge University Press, 1978), $25 at Amazon.
• Michael J. Crowe, Theories of the World from Antiquity to the Copernican Revolution, 2d ed (Dover Press, 2001), $10 at Amazon. Note: Don't be intimidated by all the mathematics in this little book! The more mathematical parts are only for reference. We will not work our way through the book, but just use parts of it, including the appendix on Stonehenge, and the excerpts from Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Galileo.

You will not read any of these books cover to cover, but you will read substantial portions of each one, so all are required. Other readings for this class are available online (see course websites).
