Week 2: Science in the Ancient Near East

Internet assignment: Publish your First Webpages! Instructions for using Google Sites

In this assignment you will follow the instructions at the Google Sites website to create your first two web pages!!!

  1. Watch the brief video tutorials to get an idea of how Google Sites works.

  2. Go to Google Sites, http://sites.google.com/. Create a Google account if you do not already have one. Then log in to Google Sites, and click the blue "Create a Site" button.

  3. On the "Create New Site" page, enter a name and description of your website as shown in the screenshot below. Be sure to check "Share with everyone in the world." Then create the blue "Create site" button.

  4. Google Sites automatically creates a first page called the Home page. First, we will add content to the "Home" page.

    1. On the new site page, click the "Edit page" button.
      Google Sites create 2

    2. A page editing field will appear to enter text, links and images for the new page. Enter whatever text you like to welcome visitors to your website. Make sure the Home page contains your name.

    3. Experiment with any of the editing functions in the editing bar above the field, which you may use to:
      1. format text
      2. create bulleted or numbered lists
      3. add a link to another website
      4. "insert" an image or a table, etc.
Just play around and see how it all works.
If you wish, Google offers these tutorials for changing page settings, uploading images, inserting links, and other page actions.

    4. Add a link to your email address on your Home page:
      1. Type a phrase such as "Email me" or however you want the link to appear.
      2. Select the text phrase, then lick the "Link" button.
      3. In the resulting dialog box, choose "Web address" for type of link, and then enter mailto:youremail@ou.edu in the url field.
         GoogleSites insert email link

    5. When you are finished, click the Save button.

  5. Second, we will create an "About Me" page. This is how you will create new pages in the future.

    1. On your new site page (shown in Step 4.1 above), click the "Create new page" button.
    2. On the "create new page" page, enter "About Me" as the Page Name. Choose the "Web Page" template. Put the page under the Home. Then click the "Create page" button.
      Google Sites create 3
    3. As before, a page editing field will appear to enter text, links and images for the new page. This page is a good place to explain something personal about who you are. Make sure the About Me page contains your name.
    4. Add a link on your About Me page to at least one external page of your choice (that is, to a page on the web that is not part of your website). You can also add some links to your favorite websites! You can include links to any websites that you want, not necessarily just those for this class.
    5. When you are finished, click the Save button.

  6. Click on "Site Map" in the left margin to view the developing structure of your website. From this map, you can click on any page to view it, edit it (as explained above), or to perform "More Actions" (cf. the screenshot in Step 4.1) such as deleting a page.

  7. Your About Me page must have a link to your Home page, and your Home page must have a link to the About Me page. To satisfy these requirements, the next step is to make sure links between the two pages appear in the navigation sidebar at the left.

    1. From your home page, click the "Edit Sidebar" link beneath the left sidebar. You will see the following screen:

      GoogleSites appearance
    2. Under Appearance, click the "Site Elements" tab to reveal sidebar navigation settings. After "Sidebar," click the "Edit" link to the right of "Navigation... delete... edit."
    3. In the resulting "Configure Navigation" pane, click the link to "Add page to sidebar navigation." Select your "About Me" page, and click OK.
    4. Click OK again, then Save Changes.
    5. Click the link to "Return to Site." You will now see the About Me page added to the sidebar. The sidebar appears the same from every page in the website, so the navigation requirements are now met.

  8. I will not know where your GoogleSites website is unless you let me know. So please go to your home page, and then select the web address displayed in the url field at the top of your web browser. Click here to email that url to me. Congratulations!

  9. To learn how to enhance your site and your web pages, go to Google Sites tutorials anytime using the link at the top right of any course web page. For example, read these tutorials for changing how your site looks. Read these tutorials for changing page settings, uploading images, inserting links, and other page actions. Or go here for more advanced page formatting instructions.
