Week 2: Science in the Ancient Near East

Internet assignment: Publish your First Webpages! Instructions for using Composer.

In this assignment you will follow the instructions at the Kaleidoscope online learning resource website to create your first two web pages!!!
(You can go to the Kaleidoscope website anytime using the link at the top right of any course web page.)

STEP ONE (of 6): Install Composer on your computer

Getting Started instructions with screen shots (Kaleidoscope)

Tip: For all links to the Kaleidoscope website, be sure not to skip a step, and to follow each step in the specific order it is given. Print these Kaleidoscope pages out for reference. Read every sentence carefully. Go slow. Re-read every sentence. Check off each step as you complete it. Almost every problem students initially encounter results from accidentally skipping one step of these instructions.

STEP TWO (of 6): Create a folder on your computer for your web assignments (call it "MyWebProject" if you like)

You will keep all the web pages and all the image files for your Web Project in this folder. The essential idea is that the latest version of the website will always reside on your computer's hard drive, and then when you prepare a new page you will publish the website to your web space. But the published website will always remain a copy of the master website in this folder on your own computer's hard drive. The computer website is the master, the published website is the mirror.

STEP THREE (of 6): Create a page titled Home with a filename of index.html

When you activated your OU webspace, a default index.html page was created -- the one that says "Congratulations! You have successfully activated your OU Web Account." You are now going to replace that generic page with your own Home page named index.html.

Note that "Home" and "index.html" are two different ways to refer to the same web page: "Home" is the title of the web page that appears to visitors in the title bar of their browser window, and "index.html" is the name of the html file that is saved in your MyWebProject folder. Naming the file index.html will ensure that it will load automatically when someone goes to the url of your OU webspace. NOTE: If you encounter instructions at Kaleidoscope that suggest naming the file home.html, please use index.html instead. The latest settings used by OU IT for your OU Webspace will work better with filenames of index.html instead of home.html.

Create a page with the filename of index.html, and make sure it includes your name:

Home page instructions with screen shots (Kaleidoscope).

Remember the Tip in bold print under Step One, above?!! This page at Kaleidoscope is perhaps the most important, because it explains the basics of web publishing. Print it out! Take your time, and check off every step, to make sure that you don't skip any steps!!!

See also the summary of these steps listed in the Composer Cheat-Sheet. You can print and keep this page handy for future reference or quick review.

Already using your OU webspace? These instructions assume that you do not already have a page named index.html published in your OU webspace. If you do already have a page named index.html that you want to keep, then you can give this file a different name, like hsci.html. If you choose this option, please make sure that you let me know about that!

STEP FOUR (of 6): Create a page titled About Me with a filename of aboutme.html

This page is a good place to explain something personal about who you are. You can also add some links to your favorite websites! You can include links to any websites that you want, not necessarily just those for this class. Here are the requirements for this aboutme.html page:

  1. When you are done, make sure you have included links to your Home page and at least one other page of your choice.
  2. In addition, create links between your two pages. That is, your About Me page must have a link to your Home page, and your Home page must have a link to this About Me page.
  3. Don't forget to add a link to your email address on your Home page.

To complete Step Four, complete the instructions on the Homepage Kaleidoscope page linked to above, in Step Three. In addition, there are Kaleidoscope help pages specifically dealing with links and email links, and links trouble-shooting. Explore these pages, too. By now you realize how important the Tip offered in Step One really is, right?

(Already have an aboutme.html page? If you wish, you can make a different page for this class, and title it Links with a file name of links-hsci.html or something like that. Just be sure to let me know the name of the page!)

STEP FIVE (of 6): Publish your MyWebSpace folder with the two webpages and view them on the Internet

The first time that you publish webpages, you will need to define your Publish settings. After you do this once, you will not need to do it again.

Students usually publish to ftp://students.ou.edu/. For students who are also University staff, you may be publishing to a different server, ftp://faculty-staff.ou.edu/. In order to see which server you are on, look yourself up at search.ou.edu and see what your web address looks like.

To complete Step Four, complete the instructions on the Homepage Kaleidoscope page linked to above, in Step Three. In addition, there is one more Kaleidoscope help pages that you should study, specifically dealing with Publishing (and see also the Composer Cheat-Sheet). I won't even mention how important it is to print out these instructions and check off every step as it is completed! -- Well okay; this was the last time. :-)

Still having problems? Make sure you're using index.html, not index.htm or Index.html.

Finally, most students will be able to access their OU Webspace by entering ftp://students.ou.edu/ in the address of your web browser. Then you will be prompted to enter your user name and password. This allows you to drag files back and forth between your OU Webspace and the master pages in your MyWebProject folder on your hard drive.

Want to use non-OU webspace? If you publish to a different web space (e.g. your Cox, Gmail or .Mac webspace), this is fine. However, I will not accept pages published in non-OU space that have advertising pop-ups. If you are already experienced at web publishing, this should not be a problem -- but if you are a beginner and will need help, you need to use your OU webspace. If you do publish to non-OU webspace, please follow the filenaming conventions specified in the assignments, putting all your files for this class into their own directory. Then, send me an email to let me know where I can find your pages.

STEP SIX: Make your Desire2Learn declaration

After you are done with the assignment, go to Desire2Learn and make your gradebook declaration (you will find the declaration in the Quizzes area at Desire2Learn). This Desire2Learn gradebook declaration is governed by the Honor Code and will be monitored, so take it very seriously!

Desire2Learn Gradebook Declaration:

(1 point) I have published a webpage called Home.
(1 point) My Home page contains my name, an email link, and a link to my About Me page.
(1 point) I have published a webpage called About Me (or Links).
(1 point) My About Me page (or Links page) contains links to my Home page and to at least one other web page of my choice.

Do you have a great quote for this page? Let me know! (If used, a new quote is worth 1 point extra credit)
