Before reading further, please make sure you are familiar with the general descriptions of the weekly Web Project and Internet assignments.

This week the Web Project and Internet assignments are combined into one assignment consisting of the following steps:

  1. Confirm your email address by replying to an email from the instructor.
  2. Activate your OUNet web account, if you have not already done so.
  3. Learn how to take a screenshot of your computer.
  4. Activate your Yuku account and explore the Yuku discussion boards for this course.
  5. Become informed about what constitutes plagiarism.

This is one of the longest assignments of the first week (especially steps 4 and 5), so plan to allow yourself a little extra time.

My tip for any long assignment is to print off the instructions and then check off each step as you work your way through. For any page long enough to trail off the lower edge of your screen, it's hard to keep everything in view if you only read it online. It's easy to forget the last steps, and having a printed checklist will increase your confidence that you are completing all that is required.

Part 1. Email Confirmation (1 point)

Before reading further, make sure you are familiar with the essential communication requirements for this course.

I will send you an email asking you two questions. Your assignment is to REPLY to this email, confirming that you received it and answering the two questions. (If you have not received this email by the second day of class, please let me know by clicking my email link at the top of this page.)

Part 2. Activate your OUNet web account. (1 point)

One of the things you will do in this class is publish a website -- and OU gives you some web space where you can do that! Every OU student has a web account where they can publish materials for their classes. To activate your web account, go to http://account.ou.edu and follow the instructions provided there. Here is what you will see:

Click the checkbox next to "Activate my OU Net Account web page." (You may also shorten your email address by filling in an alias.)

Most students will be assigned webspace on the http://students.ou.edu webserver. Some students, usually student employees, will have their webspace on the http://faculty-staff.ou.edu webserver. You can find out where your webspace is located by looking yourself up in the OU Online Directory, at http://search.ou.edu. Approximately one day after you activate your webspace, you should be able to see your web address listed in the Directory. A default home page will appear at this address until you create your own home page and replace the default file.

These accounts are small, just 10 MB (that's equivalent to about 4 photos from a 3-megapixel digital camera). You will not have any trouble publishing webpages and a small number of web-sized images, but you will not be able to publish high resolution images, audio, or video files in this small space.

Note to serious web folks: If you want, you can also publish your Web Project at Google, Mobile Me, or any other off-campus web hosting service. If you choose to use an off-campus hosting service, please activate your OU web account and put up a redirect page from your OU web account to the off-campus web address that you will be using. For example, here is my redirect page:

Part 3. Learn how to take a screenshot

Knowing how to take a screenshot can be very helpful. With screenshots you can show others how to do something, or if you need help you can send me a screenshot of what is going wrong -- that will help me a great deal in answering your question. So this first week, everyone needs to learn how to take a screenshot, and then email that screenshot to me. You will send me a screenshot in Part 4 and again in Part 5 (below), so practice taking them now. To learn how to take a screenshot, go to this page and follow the instructions outlined there until you are comfortable making screenshots.

Part 4. Activate a Yuku account and explore the Yuku discussion boards for this course. (10 points)

For 11 points, complete the instructions outlined on these two pages:

  1. Yuku 1: Create a global Yuku account
  2. Yuku 2: Join the private Yuku discussion boards for this class

These two pages of instructions are the lengthiest part of this assignment, and worth a combined 10 points. Take your time, and make sure that you complete each step in order. Print out the two pages of instructions and check off each step as it is completed. Be sure to complete all steps -- every semester many students forget to complete the last step, making your first post to introduce yourself to other members of the class. If you get stuck, there are step-by-step tutorials linked to from this general Yuku page. If that doesn't help, send me an email!

Part 5. Plagiarism quiz and screenshot (1 point):

  1. Plagiarism introduction
  2. Honor Code for this course
  3. Study the Indiana University School of Education Plagiarism Tutorial and take the 10-question Indiana University Plagiarism quiz. Keep re-taking this quiz until you obtain a 100% perfect score. When you have a pefect score, take a screenshot of the "confirmation certificate." Attach this screenshot to an email message to me. Please put "3013-Wk1-InternetAssignment" into the Subject line of the email message.

 

Conclusion: Gradebook declaration

After you are done with this assignment, go to Desire2Learn and make your gradebook declaration (you will find the declaration in the Quizzes area at Desire2Learn). Gradebook declarations may be made as often as you wish until the assignment deadline. This means that, if you wish, you can make a gradebook declaration for the first one or two steps after you finish them, and then go back and update it later once you finish the last step. (But it's up to you to remember to update your declaration, so don't forget!) Desire2Learn gradebook declarations are governed by the Honor Code.

(10 points) I have posted a few sentences introducing myself on the History of Science Online community at Yuku.
(1 point) I have obtained a 100% score on the Plagiarism quiz, and have emailed a screenshot of my Confirmation Certificate to Dr. Magruder.
