Yuku, Part I: Create a Yuku account
We will actually be using two different discussion boards for this class. You may have already seen the discussion board section inside Desire2Learn; you will have your own folder in the Desire2Learn Discussion Board, and it will be a place where the other students will leave messages for you about your web project.
Our actual class discussion -- sharing ideas, asking questions, talking about the assignments -- will happen at a different discussion board system called Yuku. Yuku offers many features that Desire2Learn does not have (see discussion board tips).
Before reading further, please make sure you are familiar with the Yuku general information. Information presented there will not be repeated here.
Our Yuku community is named "History of Science Fall 2008" and it is limited to members of this course. In other words, only students in the class can read the messages or add new messages. You will be using Yuku during this Orientation Week for your "Starting Assumptions" assignment, so it is important that you register for a free global user Yuku account as soon as possible.
In order to access our Yuku community, complete ALL of the following steps. Print this page for reference, and check off each step as you proceed!
1. Go to the main Yuku page at http://www.yuku.com. On the top of the page, you will see a link to "Sign up." Click this link and complete the form. You will need to enter the following information in order to register your free account:
2. In the next screen, you will enter a Yuku name (= profile name, username, nickname). Mine is DrMag. You do not have to use your real name for the Yuku account -- if you want to choose a nickname (or some historical figure's name) for Yuku, that is fine. But choose carefully: you will need to use this same name for the whole semester, and it is the name that the other students in class will get to know you by!
Note about your OUNet ID "4x4": Some students choose to use their OUNet ID for their nickname. For privacy reasons I urge you not to do this. If you use your OUNet ID for other purposes, you should make sure you change your OUNet password on a regular basis at http://account.ou.edu.
Optional: If you like, click "Choose file" to upload a small picture of you or that is emblematic of you (this is your avatar).
Now click "Finish." Congratulations, you have now signed up for a general Yuku account!
3. After clicking "Finish" at Yuku you are taken to another screen. Notice that the word "Logout" appears at the top of the page. When you finish signing up for a Yuku account, you are already logged in. If you are on a public computer, you will want to be sure to click this link to log out when you are finished. In the future, if you come to Yuku and have not logged in, click the Log In link at the top of the page to enter your Yuku name and password.
4. Take a screenshot:
Not here on this instruction page, but at Yuku, take a screenshot of how any Yuku page looks on your computer after you have logged in. Take a picture of the whole screen, making sure that the "Logout" link appears at the top of the screenshot, and email that screenshot to the instructor.
Congratulations! You're more than halfway there! Now go on to Yuku Activation Instructions, Part 2, which will explain how to join the private Yuku discussion boards for this class.
