Day Five

Today promises to be quite an interesting adventure!

Today we are supposed to leave the Hotel Agua Blanca and head to Toluca for lunch. From there we are heading to our final destination in Malinaco. We got some bad news last night that our bus is having some mechanical difficulties. At first we were told that we would try to make it to Toluca and switch to a new bus there. In the morning we found out that a mechanic was there to work on it. We waited a little longer to leave the hotel while he worked on it. This gave us some time to look at the local handcrafts that were on sale at the hotel. We all made some purchases knowing that this would help the local artisans that created them.

While we waited for the bus to be fixed we saw some more birds on the grounds of the hotel and for the first time I saw a malachite buttterfly! This butterfly is mainly green with brown coloring near the edges of the wings. In the morning before breakfast we saw a striped-back oriole eating fruit in a tree and there seemed to be hummingbirds everywhere. There was a grooved-bill ani out on the lawn. We also saw white-naped swifts flying in a group through the canyon.

On the left is a hummingbird that we haven't quite identified. On the right is a striped-back oriole.

This is a picture of the orchid tree which we saw on our walk down into the canyon.

This little skipper was found roosting in an aquaduct for a defunct hydroelectric plant in the lower part of the canyon.

On the road to Toluca we discovered that we would have to stop in Zitacauro to make a needed repair to the bus. Our trip leader knew of a good restaurant to eat lunch at so we wouldn't lose any time while the bus was being repaired. This was a very interesting restaurant with many different stuffed birds and animals. They also had two parrots in a cage that kept squawking until they fed them. They really enjoyed their striped sunflower seed dinner! The bus was ready just as we finished our meal. So it was on to Malinalco!

When we reached Malinalco we found out that our bus driver would be leaving us to drive the bus back to Mexico City for more needed repairs. We would be using a replacement bus in the morning. We really enjoyed Miguel and wished him a very fond farewell.

The best news on arriving at the hotel was that there was an open internet cafe just down the road near the village square. Finally I was able to connect! It hasn't been easy to find a connection in this rural, poor part of Mexico.
