Random Observations

I noticed a lot of litte things while I was in Mexico.

As I think back on my trip there were some other things that I noted that I'd like to share with you.

We saw many, many dogs. Most of them were just wandering about seemingly fending for themselves. One even followed me back to the hotel in Malinalco from the plaza and just laid down in the lobby like he belonged there!

Many children don't attend school. There is no extra help in the public schools if you are having trouble learning something. The government doesn't encourage children to attend schools and they will let most anyone open a private school.

Telephones and internet connections are scarce in the rural areas of Mexico.

Children and adults are always coming up to you to try and sell you something everywhere we went. The people are poor and they are trying to be resourceful. I have an appreciation for why Mexicans will come to America to work and live.

Water is very scarce and we saw water collection barrels on top of buildings everywhere.

Most buildings are in an unfinished state. They have rebar sticking up in the air and lots of times they place bottles over the top of these.

Most soda comes in bottles.

There doesn't seem to be much concern over smoking. We did see no smoking signs in Mexico City but in the rural areas people often smoked in restaurants, etc. We did see a few signs that warned that cigarette smoking can cause cancer.

All the gas stations are government controlled and they are called Pemex.

You have to buy toilet paper to use the bathrooms - usually 2 pesos.

The people don't seem to be concerned about litter as it is everywhere along the roadsides.

Most hotels in rural areas don't have heat or air conditioning.

There isn't any heat or air conditioning in the schools.

The people use every part of the corn plant. They even dry the stalks to feed to the animals.

There are elaborate churches everywhere, in the city and the rural areas.

Some of the roads are still made of cobblestones.

In most of the rural areas that we visited we could hear roosters in the morning.
