Filename: africa.gif Caption: Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro is located in Tanzania just south of the Kenyan border and about 200 miles south of the Equator. 3 volcanic peaks make up Kilimanjaro proper: 1. Kibo, the central and highest peak, reaches to 19,340 feet (5895m) at its summit, Uhuru Point. The inner crater contains active fumaroles, the last remnant of its violent past. The last significant volcanic activity is thought to have occurred in prehistoric times and there is little likelihood of future eruptions. 2. Shira, the western peak, is relatively unexceptional and severely eroded. Its features have largely been obscured by the subsequent eruptions of Kibo. 3. Mawenzi, the eastern peak, is a jagged mass of rock and scree. Only climbers with advanced skills and mountaineering gear attempt its summit. |
