Silver Fork Sunday

Sunday morning greeted the SL valley with a 3-4" dusting while the mountains received 6-8" of the heavenly bounty. Although the avalanche forecast described it as "lipstick on a pig" we were determined to find out how ugly (or pretty, depending on how you look at it) it was.

first hand knowledge in the group suggested silver fork to hold the goods.

and indeed, it looked really really good. a couple of people got there ahead of us, but plenty of lines to ski.

Bart is stoked. he's in the introductory picture as well.

towards the end of his first run.

the damage done after our first descent. you can play "guess which line is mine."

For Christmas, my parents bought me a GPS receiver, the Garmin GPS 60Csx . This is an incredible little device, and i will spare you the details, but suffice it to say, it has come in handy on several occasions now and is a great way for me to learn more about the terrain here in the wasatch. I downloaded our "track" to National Geographics TOPO! mapping software. This software features a 3D viewer, and gives a slightly different perspective than the regular topo map. so here, on the left hand side is our main ascent/descent route and laps in to the main East, north east bowl of Silver Fork (check the compass in the upper left).

this was a great tour! such good snow, over 3K in vertical, the legs were rubbery at the end of the day, and i walked around like a zombie, but i greeted monday with a huge shit eating grin.

Below are links to what other Nerds in the group made and contributed.

Erik's Powerpoint titled "Silver For 1-21-07" can be found here.

Below is the readout from Bart's "where am in now" machine:
