Thanksgiving in Oahu Susan and I travelled with her family to the
Hawaiian island of Oahu to spend Thanksgiving and attend the wedding of her
first cousin, Eric Roberts. I had not been to Hawaii since I was a toddler, so
I was very excited for this trip. The picture above is from Sunset Beach.
Unfortunately, the waves were not sufficient for the pro surfers to be out, but
this is one of the premier destinations for big wave
surfing.

We (Susan,
myself, Susan's brothers Martin and Tony, and Martin's partner Moira) stayed
with Susan's aunt's partner. This is Ken Taylor's (pics) house on the west side
of the island, near Waianae. He designed and built this house and the views of
the ocean and of the mountains in the back were awesome. He has a skylight in
one of the bedrooms, and in the mornings you can see the hundreds of birds that
nest in the cliff side. Incredible! (this also happens to be the bedroom Susan
and I stayed in! Thanks Eric!). The hot tub is next to a carefully manicured
fish pond and waterfall. At night, you can hear the soft trickle of water, or
you can lounge in the hot tub underneath the cliffs and star light. It was
truly peaceful. Ken is a great golfer, an entrepreneur, world traveller,
artist, architect, and an all-around great guy. His hospitality was amazing.
Every morning, we were greeted with breakfast; apple pancakes, banana pancakes,
spanish omelets, pineapples, bacon, OJ, coffee--the works. We really enjoyed
staying with him at his house. Thank you!
![]() ![]() This is Eric right after the wedding and at the reception with his beautiful new bride Chantelle, and his buddy Earl. The reception featured live music, delicious poki, kegs of bud light, and traditional dance (Tahitian and Hawaiian). There were probably 300 people there! My favorite food was probably the ahi poki, but the lau lau (i think, was pork wrapped in taro leaves) was also really good (tasted kinda like mexican carnitas). I tried the poi, but that may take a little bit of getting used to. ![]() ![]() Good food and good dancing....Susan and I tore up the macarena shortly after this but didn't compare to Eric's fertility dance. ![]() Golf was a big part of the trip. My rounds were with Ken, Al (Susan's dad), and Martin (Susan's brother). This is the signature 17th hole at Waikele Golf Club. Measuring 181 yards from the whites, it poses a challenge with the large koi filled pond, and narrow green, but there is a large safe area to the right (where I "layed up" both days!). In case you were wondering, I played horrible. I developed a shank on the first day and shot 112. I went out with a 57 on the second day, but came home with a 44. Hopefully, that's the last time I see that particular monster! ![]() This is Susan's mom Phyllis preparing the turkey. All the food was so delicious!! Martin and Moira made some jalapeno crab dip for appetizers, and Susan and I made the salad; spinach, walnuts, feta, and cranberries with a raspberry vinigarrette. yum! There was turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, veggies, pies, and ice cream. It was all very delicious! Posted: Wed - November 30, 2005 at 06:26 PM |
