Second Release of the New Version Mar 12, 2005

The second release of the 2.0 version is now available on the Downloads page. Sorry it took so long ;-)

Google is back among many other improvements...

First Release of the New Version! Oct 13, 2004

The first release of the 2.0 version is now available! Hop on over to the Download page to get it. It's definitely rough around the edges but it gets the job done.

Here's another mosaic it came up with using 100x100 rectangular tiles and a local directory source of over 40,000 images:

More Tiles Sep 12, 2004

Here's the same image as below, this time using 100x100 tiles:

A First Look Sep 7, 2004

Well it's starting to work again, and looking good to boot. Here are before and after shots showing mosaics created by the 1.0.1 version and the soon-to-be 2.0 version using the same set of 3200 images and 40x40 rectangular tiles:

That's a picture of me sitting at my first computer, an Apple II+, when I was 11 years old.

New Version Coming Soon! Aug 29, 2004

An almost complete rewrite of MacOSaiX is coming along well. MacOSaiX was my first Cocoa program and it makes me blush to go back and look at some of the code in there. Two years later and a lot wiser in the ways of Cocoa, I'm rewriting MacOSaiX the way it should have been written the first time. It will be faster, use less memory, crash less, produce better looking mosaics and have the following new features:

  • Images will be able to be used multiple times within the same mosaic. This will be customizable by setting how many tiles apart an image can be reused.
  • Image sources will be removeable after a mosaic has been started.
  • A QuickTime image source will be added that will pull still frames from any QuickTime movie. (And no, it won't rip DVD's for you, you'll have to do that yourself.)
  • Third party developers will be able to create MacOSaiX plug-ins to do custom tile shapes and image sources. I'm hoping people will do some really fun stuff with this.

Crashes on Panther (OS X 10.3) Aug 29, 2004

Unfortunately MacOSaiX has a habit of crashing on Panther. Even more unfortunately I managed to lose the source code I used to create the current version of MacOSaiX. I had a fairly recent backup so I didn't lose everything. Rather than spending a lot of time trying to figure out what was lost I have been spending my time on the new version.

Be sure to also check out all of the mosaics tagged with 'MacOSaiX' on flickr!

This is actually a blend of a mosaic and the original, a nice effect.

Submit your own mosaic!

I don't have the room or the bandwidth to host everyone's full size mosaics so please put your mosaic up on a web site and send me a link to it along with a title for the mosaic. I'll include a thumbnail here and send users to your site when they click on it to see the full sized image. This is an all ages site so nothing too risqué, please. ;-)
