This couldn't have happened at a better time.

I have a long term goal of inventing my own cable pattern. I know what i want it to look like, I just have to get it to work. Last night I was swatching some cables in bright yellow acrylic yarn (that was supposed to be for the fry-up ), but I was really having some troubles. I am lucky enough to own Barbara Walker's Treasury and Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns books. The first Treasury of Knitting Patterns represents most of my public library's knitting book collection, and i fell in love and had it checked out forever. Okay people..... These books are awesome. they are just collections of patterns and photos of swatches, but there is just soooooo many cool things in them. There are twisted stitch patterns, two-color knitting patterns, cables, everything! I was so mesmerized that i just kept flipping through the book thinking of all of that patterns I would like to try. Then I realized that none of these things require fancy yarn. Since i have been having a love affair with nice yarn recently, this is a bit refreshing. I can knit these patterns out of crappy acrylic and have just as much fun as knitting a sweater out of Noro (or so i think - i have never made an entire sweater out of noro because i can't afford it).

It is good to know that i should just knit up all of the acrylic yarn i have been wanting to get rid of. Unfortunately, I can't really figure out what I would make... An afghan maybe.... I kinda shy away from that idea since many of the patterns would have a really ugly wrong side... maybe some pieced together pillows.... any ideas?
