Go Gently
A "Behind the Scenes" Account
of producing a emotional Tribute

Photo of mom pushing dad in a wheelchair in front of the nursing home.Larry Klug has composed numerous slideshow presentations for families, organizations, music events, church projects, and for his own family. He did face a moving, but difficult project on June 7th, 2004. His father, Lawrence Klug passed away. Larry wanted to give his father a meaningful tribute by utilizing today’s multimedia technology. He felt that his unique approach of remembering his father was more valuable than posting photographs on a sheet of poster board.

Gathering Up the Resources
A photo of Larry's dad and uncel Dick holding up a bucket of lard.

Larry’s aunt, Betty Klug presented him with a collection of old photos that dated back to the early thirties. Lawrence Klug was one of five brothers and a sister. “In this photograph, my father and his younger brother, Dick was holding a can of pure lard,” explained Larry Klug. The photos of the military funeral service were taken with a digital camera by Jan Keith.

Dad's war medals
After scanning the collection of photographs, Larry began to search for the perfect song to use for the slideshow. He came across a song that was composed by world-renowned keyboard artist, Suzanne Ciani. Her song, Go Gently was original written in tribute of her father, Dr. A. Walter Ciani. Amazingly, Lawrence Klug and Mr. Ciani both served in World War II. “Go Gently was truly the right oil for my multimedia canvas,” said Larry.

The last detail was locating the right slideshow application to blend the photographs and music together. Larry had worked with various slideshow applications for about a decade. He worked with Astound, Kai’s PowerShow, Microsoft PowerPoint, iPhoto, ArKaos VMP, and Apple’s Keynote. “I’m a stickler when it comes to image and sound synchronization. Most of the applications lack file output options, customizing separate side duration, and applying sound over several slides. I didn’t have time to perform workarounds,” said Larry.

After reading an article from MacCentral’s web site regarding a professional quality slideshow application, Larry visited the Boinx Software website to download a preview version of Untitled App.

Link to FotoMagico websiteUntitled App (later called FotoMagico) integrates with two of Apple’s standard applications, iPhoto and iTunes. The user can zoom and rotate images on the fly as well as inserting several MP3 song tracks in the same slideshow. The slideshow could be exported as a QuickTime web movie, a DV file in either NTSC or PAL, or send it to TOAST 6.0 to be burned on a DVD. The DV files can be used with Apple’s iDVD. “FotoMagico is the "Final Cut Pro" of professional slideshow presentation software,” said Larry.

Sharing the Tribute

The slideshow, “Go Gently” was sent to several relatives as well as to Ms. Ciani and Boinx Software. Posted below are the following
comments in regards to his slideshow.

“ Dear Larry,
I returned to office this week and found the time yesterday to watch your slideshows. They are really impressing. It’s amazing to see how you harmonized audio and images and used the transition and pan & zoom options.”

Vera Ruttkowski - Boinx Software

“ Dear Larry,
It has just occurred to me that perhaps I did not tell you my reaction to your video about your Dad. I couldn't tell you right away because it made me just cry.
So, so beautiful. What a tribute to your dad. You did it right away. And it is just perfect. I am so honored that you used my dad's music.”

Suzanne Ciani – Composer of “Go Gently”

From the United Kingdom

"Hello Larry
Just to say how I loved your slideshow tribute to your Dad. My father
was also born in 1919 on the 15th November, and died at the end of
2002, and I feel the same way about him. He was the greatest man I have ever had the privilege of knowing. The people who went through WW2 have
our eternal debt, and I feel we would do well to remember the gentle,
humane, and forgiving nature of those who lived through that time, and
fought that true evil, in the rather hysterical atmosphere of the times
that we live in now.

Best wishes
James
Brighton UK"

Closer to home

"The tribute to your Father was, well, Words just can't describe it. (I needed the Kleenex box, let's put it that way.) It was a very emotional, moving tribute to him. I've never seen anything like it."

Best wishes,
Carolyn Bailey
