Buys a Woman (1957)
"Terror in the sun . . . Deep in the Australian outback a woman is brutally slain. Her small daughter vanishes. Is Ole Fren Yorkey, the half-crazed wanderer, the killer? Detective-Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte must scour the bushlands half a continent away from civilisation for clues. Only in the weird land of the willi-willi and the dread pointing bone can this dangerous riddle be solved." - from the 1988 Collier edition "Mrs. Bell, housekeeper at Mount Eden, is found murdered and little Linda Bell, seven years old, is missing. Ole Fren Yorky is suspected of the killing and the kidnapping. Detective-Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte is seconded to investigate the crime on behalf of the South Australian Police. He spends much time talking with the local aborigines because he is convinced that they know more about the case than they are saying. When he discovers that old Chief Canute has been promised Meena and that Charlie is in love with her, he buys Meena for forty plugs of tobacco and tells Charlie that he will give him Meena if he will help him. The story ends with a thrilling race against time as flood waters from the Northern River rush into the almost dry Lake Eyre." – from "The Armchair Detective" Location: Mount Eden (fictional), Lake Eyre, South Australia. Bony Buys a Woman was published in 1957 by Heinemann of London. The same year the American edition was printed by the Doubleday Crime Club under the title The Bushman Who Came Back. The Collier edition of 1988 is pictured here.
