Breakaway House (1987)

 

"In an isolated valley in Western Australia a man has inexplicably disappeared. Now policeman Harry Tremayne has come to Bowgada cattle station determined to find out what has happened to his brother – and why. His investigations quickly lead him to supect that something far more sinister than a small-time gold-smugling racket is afoot.
Someone in this small community must know something, but no-one is talking. And the clues seem to lead to Breakaway House.
Morris Tonger, the liquor-loving and womanising proprietor of Breakaway House, employs far more men than are needed to work his land, yet his fences and stock are neglected. Harry is immediately drawn to Frances, Tonger's enchanting niece, but can she be trusted?
Harry Tremayne resigns from the police force knowing instinctively that this case is going to require more than conventional police methods will allow...

Location: Bowgada Homestead and Breakaway House, Western Australia. Both fictionl, although the name of the first seems to be taken from the nearby town of Bowgada.
