The Boney Television Series

Between 1972 and 1973 Norfolk International released twenty-six hour-long episodes of a mystery programme based on Arthur Upfield's books. The show was called "Boney" (a deliberate mispelling of the name to clarify its pronounciation) and was produced by John McCallum, Bob Austin and Lee Robinson. The Show cast James Laurenson, a New Zealander, in the role of Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte.

For further information on the Boney TV series I recommend Roger Mitchell's article, "Boney," in the February/March 2000 issue of Classic Television and the wonderful website put together by Don Storey. Both include a number of production notes and details about the actors and producers and about the difficulty of casting the role of Bony. Don Storey's website includes many pictures as well as an episode guide.

The Boney televsion series has never aired in North American to my knowledge, thus most of us outside of Britain and Australia have never seen it. No network seems to have any interest in airing the episodes at this point in time and I have been contacted over the years, as a result of this website, by individuals who work for the company that holds the rights. They have, sadly, said that there are no plans to release the episodes on video or DVD. Several years ago I was sent a DVD by a reader of this website, which included VHS records of a handful of episodes that I hope to post here at some point in future. If you have any further information on the Boney series or are able to find recordings that you would like to make available, please
