Our Worship

Holy Communion    The Daily Office    The Prayer Book

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come before him! Worship the Lord in holy array. (1 Chronicles 16:28,29)

The worship that we offer here on earth is but a foretaste of the heavenly worship we are to be part of in the future. As we present our offerings to God through our worship he speaks to us through Word and Sacrament. We express our love and devotion to God and praise him for his glory and strength. He graciously responds and reminds us of both who he is and what he has done for us. He uses outward visible signs, things we can see and touch and taste to convey realities that are invisible but deeply spiritual. Sacramental worship grows out of the nature of Christ Himself, the enfleshed, incarnate Word of God who became a man to share our life, to demonstrate God's love and presence with us, and to redeem us by his sacrifice on the Cross. Our sacramental worship at its best, strives to express this very reality: that Christ, our crucified-risen Lord is here in our midst enabling us to demonstrate God's love and saving grace for all people.

And so our worship takes seriously the belief that God our Father desires what is best for those whom He loves. God speaks to us as his Word is read and as the sermon is heard. He also speaks to us through the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism. The Sacraments are signs that use outward visible elements to convey the inward spiritual grace that is ours through Jesus Christ. This is why at Living Word we take seriously both God's Word written and the Sacraments that He has ordained.

At Living Word we have a rich expression of worship that is both Evanglical and Catholic, in keeping with Anglican tradition. Our worship brings together old and new as we seek to offer to God the best  we have.  We follow both the liturgies found in the Book of Common Prayer of the Reformed Episcopal Church as well as contemporary liturgies based on those found in the Prayer Book. The Book of Common Prayer is unique in that it combines the practices – the prayers, hymns, and lessons – of historic Catholic Christianity with the theology and understanding of the Protestant Reformation. For this reason the phrase "Reformed Catholicity" is sometimes used to describe the Episcopal tradition. At Living Word we combine with that historic tradition the best that the modern world has to offer as well, singing a mix of hymns, old and new, and contemporary praise songs that express what God has done for us in his grace and mercy.

We invite you to join us at Living Word as we worship our Lord in Word and Sacrament. We trust that in doing so you will be drawn into a deeper fellowship with God.
