The Sacrament of Holy Communion

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them saying, "Drink of it all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins." (St. Matthew 26:26-27)

Ever since this Last Supper of Jesus and the first disciples prior to his crucifixion, Christians have continued to follow this directive. At Living Word we continue this tradition. One of our primary acts of worship when we gather is centred on this meal of blessed bread and wine. As we remember what Jesus told his disciples we trust that those words are being said to us each time we reenact this meal. We believe that as we take part in this act of worship, Jesus is present with us in this sacrament helping us to realize the grace he gives and to remember the sacrifice he made for us.

We all have experienced the bond which can develop, even if just for a short time, when we sit down to eat a meal together. In this final meal which Jesus had with his disciples, he indicated that bond would exist forever, and would become especially evident in this specific act of repeated worship. Our Holy Communion services at Living Word are a continuation of this union with Jesus Christ, and with one another.

Holy Communion is the place where we both begin and return to strengthen to find strength and to be reminded of what our ministry is in the world and how we will carry it out, and in whose name it is that we live our lives. Our celebration of Communion is truly our communion with Jesus Christ, more than a mere memorial of what he has done for us. Holy Communion is an outward visual sign of inward spiritual grace that all Christians receive as they are renewed into new life through Jesus Christ.

At Living Word we understand that Holy Communion is important to our life as the Body of Christ, and so we celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper every Sunday. All baptized Christians who know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour are welcome at our Lord's Holy Table. If you have not been baptized or are not yet a Christian, please feel welcome to speak with our pastor about what each involves. Our goal is to make disciples of all men and women and a part of that is teaching others what it means to be follow Christ.
