Curse of the Golden Flower

A new movie with Chow Yun-Fat? Of course we had to see it. The movie turned out, though, to be just ... okay.

The director Zhang Yi Mou, famous for Hero and House of Flying Daggers, puts together another beautiful film, but this one falls a bit flat to me. He tries some epic battle scenes, but their climax is almost anti-climactic, the outcome being obvious almost as soon as the soldiers line up. Scenes were limited -- all filming took place on 3 to 4 sets. I wonder if Yi Mou had a limited budget?

This is a historic piece, about an emperor in the Yang Dynasty. Costumes were accurate, but overall, I wonder why this movie was played.
